Invitation to the 6th International Conference on Evidence Law and Forensic Science 2017 (ICELFS)
On behalf of the hosts, organizers and sponsors, the Organizing Committee cordially invites you to Baltimore, Maryland, United States, during August 14th – 16th 2017 for the 6th International Conference on Evidence Law and Forensic Science.
The 6th Convention of the ICELFS will be the first one held in the United States, after the first four conventions held in Beijing, China and the 5th Convention held in Adelaide, Australia: a move which further marks the success of the conferences to date in attracting an interdisciplinary and international delegation.
ICELFS 2017 will examine The Relationship between Evidence Law and Forensic Science. The proceedings will continue the ICELFS tradition of rigorous exchange between the disciplines of Evidence Law and Forensic Science.
Conference Agenda
The conference will be held at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law for an intensive three-day program of panel presentations where speakers are invited to critique and review developments and reforms in Evidence Law and Forensic Science. The conference topics (and sub-topics) are as follows:
Day 1: Forensic Science v Evidence Law
- Search for Truth: Scientific & Legal Perspectives
- Finality: Scientific Quest & Judicial Finality
Day 2: Fitness & Judicial Survival
- Expert Opinion & Reasonable Scientific Certainty
- Scientific Application within a Legal Framework
Day 3: Bridging the Gap between Science and Law
- Procedures & Terminology
- Educational Measures
Where appropriate, panels for the 6th ICELFS will comprise speakers from the disparate disciplines and different countries in order to promote interdisciplinary exchanges. The full program for the conference will be announced following receipt of all abstracts/papers.
Paper Submissions
Submissions are invited on issues arising with respect to the fields of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, including but not limited to topics concerning:
- Processes for ensuring the reliable use of forensic evidence at trial, such as assurances of transparency, formulating strict standards for admissibility, permitting court appointed experts and further appeals against conviction.
- Problems and developments in particular fields of forensic science, such as DNA evidence, fingerprint evidence and the cognitive sciences.
- The importance and limitations of the opinions from forensic pathology experts and its influence in judicial activities.
- Expression of forensic evidence at trial and its combination with other evidence in determining facts in litigation.
- The nature and purpose of proof in the administration of justice and the requirements and standards set by law for proof in investigation, trial appeal and review.
- The scope and reliability of the forensic sciences and their place and influence within the administration of justice.
- Foundations and principles guiding reform of the law of evidence in developed and developing nations.
- The role and influence of scientific, moral, cultural, religious and political values on judicial proof in the administration of justice.
- Processes for ensuring the reliable use of forensic evidence during investigation.
Submissions outside these topics but within the overall theme of the Conference are welcome.
Manuscript and Abstract Submission General Guidelines:
- All submissions shall be written in English.
- For papers on topic of forensic science – Abstracts shall contain a minimum of 600 words to a maximum of 800 words.
- For papers on topic of forensic science – Abstracts shall include: (a) a short, specific title; (b) three to five keywords; (c) a sentence statement of objective(s); (d) a brief statement of materials and methods; (e) a summary of results; (f) a general conclusion.
- For those who would like to apply for the best paper awards, or travel and conference expenses, a full text of manuscript should be submitted for review.
- For those who would like to apply for the outstanding young investigator/scholar awards, a full text of manuscript should be submitted with attached current CV.

All submissions will be reviewed anonymously by an expert panel of the Organizing Committee in order to determine a final list of speakers. A formal invitation for speakers will be sent out by June 1st, 2017 via email.
