The 1st International Symposium on Sino Swiss Evidence Science (ISSSES 2015) was successfully held in the South Base of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization (CICJC South Base) in Haikou during January 19 and 21, 2015. This was an event promoting academic exchange in evidence science-related areas. The symposium was organized by the Sino Swiss Evidence Science Research Center (SSESRC), co-organized by CICJC Southern Base / Hainan University (HNU) and held by the Key Laboratory of Evidence Science, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). It was chaired by Professor Baosheng ZHANG, who is currently the vice president of CUPL and the chairman of CICJC. The Organizing Committee consisted of Professor Baosheng ZHANG and Professor Lin CHANG from CUPL and Christophe CHAMPOD from the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in Switzerland.
Chinese and foreign participants in ISSSES 2015
ISSSES 2015 is the first international symposium organized by SSESRC. Under the cooperation agreement between CICJC and UNIL, both parties will make ISSSES an international symposium brand enjoying a high reputation in the global field of evidence science. Participants are identified through public collection of papers and anonymous review. ISSSES 2015 invited 33 prestigious scholars from China, Switzerland, the United States and New Zealand to present their paper and discuss such topics as “How can forensic science promote judicial civilization?” and “Law issues inside forensic science” in depth.
At the opening ceremony of ISSSES 2015, Professor Chongmin WANG, the vice president of HNU and the director of CICJC South Base, made a welcoming speech, and Professor CHANG, the president of the Key Laboratory of Evidence Science, CUPL, extended an opening speech. Professor Alan from the School of Law, Northwestern University, conducted a keynote speech “The Domain of Evidence Law”, and Professor CHAMPOD from UNIL delivered a keynote speech “Fingerprint evidence in the UK: the case of R v. Smith”.

At the symposium, the evidence law scholars “challenged” the forensic science scholars with “Forensic Examination at Trials in China” (Baosheng ZHANG), “Role and Position of Identifier in Judicial Practice” (Yunlong MAN), “Evidence Evaluation and Interpretation Philosophy Based on Probabilization and Bayesian Model” (Alex BIEDERMANN) and “Evidence Practice Problems in Judicial Reform in China and Foreign Countries” (Zhong ZHANG), while the latter responded with “Determination of Source of Black Powder Samples through Isotope Analysis” (Natacha GENTILE), “Test Method for Red and Black Cross Timing Sequence in Suspicious Files” (Jing WANG), “New Technique for Extraction of Drug from Biological Samples” (Liang MENG) and “Rapid Detection of TNT Based on Molecular Recognition Technology” (Hongxia HAO).
In the 33 participants, the Chinese delegation was composed of 21 members who are respectively from CUPL (12), Chinese People’s Public Security University (2), China Criminal Police College (2), East China University of Political Science and Law (1), Fujian Police College (1) and public security bureau / procuratorate / court of Tianjin and Foshan (3). The Swiss delegation consisted of nine members who are all from UNIL. Two were American and one New Zealander. At the symposium, the scholars thought outside the box of their own academic fields to enjoy the inspiring atmosphere of interdisciplinary research.

Through three days of in-depth exchange and intense discussion, ISSSES 2015 was brought to a successful close on the evening of February 21. At the closing ceremony, Professor ZHANG summarized the results achieved at the symposium from six aspects – interdisciplinary, cross-border, cross-cultural and cross-justice system research, common orientation and academic frontier. Professor CHAMPOD introduced the 2nd ISSSES which will be held in 2016 in Switzerland and made a sincere invitation to the scholars.
