China-US Forensic Science Roundtable Symposium Held in the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, CUPL

 

 At the symposium

June 30th, 2015, China-US Forensic Science Roundtable Symposium was successfully held in the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, China University of Political Science and Law. Professor Shi Jianzhong, vice president of CUPL, Professor Zhang Baosheng, co-chair of the “2011 Plan” – China Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization and honorary dean of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, CUPL, Professor Chang Lin, dean of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science and director of Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine& Science, Professor Wang Xu, vice dean of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science and deputy director of Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine& Science, Professor Liu Jianwei, deputy director of Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine& Science, Professor Zhao Dong, professor of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science and Professor Wang Zhuhao, director of office of International Exchanges and Cooperation of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science attended the symposium. Professor Guo Zhaoming, deputy director of Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine& Science chaired the symposium. And students from the Evidence Institute participated in the symposium.

Representatives of United States include Mr. David R. Fowler, Maryland Forensic Bureau chief, Professor Erin G., Associate Dean of the Graduate School, University of Maryland, Professor Li Ling, pathologist of Maryland Forensic Bureau and professor of University of Maryland, Professor Zhang Xiang, poison analyst of Maryland Forensic Bureau, Professor Victor Weedn, President of American Academy of Forensic Sciences and head of the Forensic Science Department of George Washington University as well as Professor Ralph Hruban, head of Pathology Department of Johns Hopkins University.

Professor Zhao Dong

Shi Jianzhong, vice president of CUPL delivered the opening speech on behalf of CUPL, showing a warm welcome to the delegates of United States and hoping that there will be further joint exchanges and cooperation with respect to research, teaching and talents training, using the China-US Forensic Science Research Center as a platform. Later, Professor Zhao Dong introduced the development of Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science.

Professor David R. Fowler

David R. Fowler, Maryland Forensic Bureau chief pointed out that the China-US Forensic Science Research Center had made important developments since its establishment more than one year ago. And it had made breakthroughs on running schools jointly and academic exchanges between the two sides. As the first cooperation project of judicial identification and forensic science between China and America, China-US Forensic Science Research Center had positive influence on the exchanges and learning on talents training, teaching and research between the two countries. David R. Fowler expected to consistently deepen the cooperation with China University of Political Science and Law as wel as the Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization, making further progress in a broader sense.

   

Professor Erin G.                           

Erin G., associate dean of the Graduate School of University of Maryland, stated that the MS-JM graduate program, which is jointly organized by CUPL, would share the credits between the two sides. After graduation, the students will get a Master of Science degree of Forensic Medicine major and a Juris Master degree of Forensic Science major from CUPL at the same time, which is really an important breakthrough in the research and teaching field of China-US forensic science cooperation. At the same time, she expected the graduate students from CUPL to go to America as soon as possible, strengthen the exchanges and research on medicolegal death investigation, identification and knowledge and skills of the system of legal judgment and promote the international communication and collaborative developments in the related fields.

Professor Victor Weedn

Victor Weedn, president of American Academy of Forensic Sciences and head of Forensic Science Department of George Washington University expressed that George Washington University shares similar prospects of development with CUPL, having the oldest and most prestigious forensic evidence science major. George Washington University is located in the capital of America and rooted in the core hub of national security. And its students are able to get in close touch with many crime laboratories and criminal investigation agencies, which belong to the federal government. George Washington University hopes to cooperate with CUPL in the education of students.

Shi Jianzhong, vice president of CUPL and Professor Zhang Baosheng, co-chair of CICJC and honorary dean respectively delivered the “Special Contribution” certificate to Professor Li Ling, pathologist of Maryland Forensic Bureau and professor of University of Maryland and the editorial board certificate of Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine to Mr. David R. Fowler and Victor Weedn.

           

Professor Zhang Baosheng

Professor Zhang Baosheng made the summary statement. He fully affirmed the significance of the symposium. And he pointed out that China-US Forensic Science Research Center is a cooperative institution established jointly by “2011 Plan” China Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization, “111 Plan” China Base for Evidence Science Innovation and Talent Recruitment and overseas institutions. As a bridge of international cooperation of forensic science, the center has made significant progress on academic exchanges and personnel training between China and America. China will continue to strengthen the exchanges and cooperation with America and jointly promote the judicial civilization
