Launched in 2015 under the joint effort of the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization and the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), the Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine is the only international journal published fully in English that is hosted in China in the field of forensic science and forensic/legal medicine. It was published in May (inaugural issue) and in Nov. (Volume 1, Issue 2). From 2016, the journal will be published quarterly. The abbreviated journal name is JFSM (ISSN: 2349-5014, E-ISSN: 2455-0094). The journal is published and distributed by Medknow Publications belonging to Wolters Kluwer Health business）. The online journal system is currently running well, and submissions from domestic and foreign contributors are welcome. The journal also provides an app for iPad.

Forensic science includes forensic medicine as a natural science discipline in a broader sense. It utilizes scientific methods to address and resolve issues related to the interests of the judicial system. It provides not only scientific evidence for judicial litigation but also professional support for national management and public security.

Forensic science in China has its own characteristics, distinct from that of other countries. Because of the basic national situation in China, Chinese forensic scientists have accumulated rich experiences through dealing with large-scaled and complex litigation cases, for which forensic science is usually required. The course of forensic science in China is closely related to legal issues and therefore shows strong localization features. With protruding highlights in their research studies, Chinese forensic science has its own unique higher education and talent cultivation models, providing abundant resources and research accomplishments for the international forensic science community.

The mission of JFSM is to “let Chinese forensic science be integrated into the world; let the world know more about Chinese forensic science.” China’s own voice must be heard in the international forensic science field. Chinese forensic science culture and research should be recognized on the international forensic science arena, providing a window for international colleagues to learn more about China.

In recent years, the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, CUPL has made significant achievements in international academic exchange and talent recruitment. In 2013, as a member of the first group, it was enrolled in the “2011 Plan” of China - Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization. Meanwhile, it was also authorized with the “111 Plan” of China - Evidence Science Innovation and Talent Base. The above educational resources offer an excellent platform and great opportunities for starting our brand new journal, JFSM. The establishment of JFSM is essential in accomplishing the goals of the Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization.

The editorial board of JFSM is composed of over 50 prestigious experts and scholars from China and abroad in related fields, including 2 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Prof. Yao Liu and Prof. Bing Cong. Dr. Ling Li, Medical Examiner of the Chief Medical Examiner Office of the State of Maryland, USA, is the Editor-in-chief of JFSM. She is a forensic pathologist and a professor of the University of Maryland, USA.

JFSM covers the broadest range of science and medical topics interacting with law. Subjects include but are not limited to criminalistics, digital and multimedia sciences, engineering science, forensic anthropology, forensic clinical medicine, forensic odontology, forensic pathology, forensic biology, forensic radiology, forensic toxicology, jurisprudence, questioned documents, forensic psychiatry, and behavioral science. Submissions of articles on malpractice or ethics in forensic science and medicine are also acceptable. The journal publishes original research articles, reviews, case reports, brief communications, commentaries, editorials, letters to editor, and a few other things.

Issues 1 and 2 included 17 original research articles, 4 reviews, 2 brief communications, 2 letters to editor, 1 letter from Editor-in-chief, 1 editorial, 1 case report, and 1 commentary. JFSM has been supported by domestic and international experts since its inaugural issue, and it has received wide academic recognition. It is becoming globally significant in the fields of forensic science and medicine. It offers an excellent platform for promoting Chinese forensic science and medicine. It will definitely make indelible contributions toward acquainting Chinese science and culture with the rest of the world.
