Academic activities in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science—Lectures on Forensic Science in USA—successfully completed

On May 20, 2016, Professor David R. Fowler, chief medical examiner for Maryland and director of the Forensic Medical Center in Baltimore, and Professor Victor Weedn, director of the Department of Forensic Science of George Washington University and chairman of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, carried out lectures on Forensic Science in the United States in Fada Institute of Forensic Medicine & Science. Professor of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science (CUPL) and eitorial office director of the Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine (JFSM), Dr. Dong Zhao hosted the lectures. Dr. Ling Li, forensic pathologist and medical examiner of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Maryland, and Dr. Xiang Zhang, the forensic toxicology specialist of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Maryland were invited to attend the lectures as honorary guests.

The event was sponsored by the 2011 Plan - Collaborative Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization, the 111 Plan - Base for Evidence Science Innovation and Talent Recruitment, and the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, China University of Political science and Law. It is one of the academic activity series in celebtrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science.

Prof. Victor Weedn

Professor David R. Fowler and professor Victor Weedn gave lectures  titled “Forensic investigation of death in police custody during the period of detention - the case of Gray, Baltimore” and “The present situation and future of American forensic science”, respectively. With the attractive presence as worldwide well known forensic scientists, they have a favorable reception for their profound academic attainments and theoretical knowledge.

As a substantial extension to the world forensic science for the teachers and students in our institute, the letures enriched the front knowledge of the forensic science in the United States, and played an important role in the theoretical research of forensic science between China and the United States, and in international academic exchange and cooperation. The teachers and students occupying all the seats benefited a lot from the lectures, and interacted with speakers on many occasions. Finally, the lectures successfully ended in a heated discussion.

Dr. Victor W. Weedn, M.D., J.D., director of the Department of Forensic Science, George Washington University. As a pathologist and lawyer in court, he has advanced academic and practical experience. In recent years, he has also served as a forensic pathologist at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Maryland, and he has been responsible for the establishment of the army's DNA laboratory for personal identification and served as director of the former state crime laboratory. He carried out the research in the early stage of the development of DNA PCR and mitochondrial DNA analysis in forensic science. He was an expert witness in the case of O.J. Simpson, attended the identification of the Russian Nicholas S, participated in the trial of Hossain Sadam and so on. His books and articles covered a wide range, and he is the editorial board member of the four journals on forensic medicine. He has been active in the field of forensic science, and is currently the chairman of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He is currently committed to further strengthen the research of forensic science on the basis of the existing achievements.

 

Professor Ling Li, forensic pathologist and researcher; medical examiner of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Maryland; the doctoral or post doctoral tutor of the University of Maryland; distinguished adjunct associate professor of the Johns Hopkins University; adjunct professor in forensic science of the University of Maryland; the winner of "Outstanding Young Scholar Award" in international forensic science and "Chunhui Plan" by the Ministry of Education; distinguished reviewer of the “Changjiang Scholars Program” by the Ministry of Education; eitorial board member of the journal of Injury Epidemiology; chief editor of the textbook “Forensic Medicine” and the Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine.

 

 

 

 

Professor Xiang Zhang, forensic toxicologist of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Maryland; editorial member of the textbook “Forensic Medicine”. He was engaged in the research of AIDS in the clinical immunology laboratory of the University of Maryland in 1991, and became a forensic toxicologist in 1996, with the certificate of American poison chemistry.
