Invited by Construction of World-class Universities and World-class Disciplines, “111 Plan” Base for Evidence Science Innovation and Talent Recruitment and Key Laboratory of Evidence Science (Ministry of Education), CUPL, Professor Thomas Man from the International Law School of Peking University, also an adjunct professor of CUPL delivered courses on Law-Constitution-Legal Profession and Practices in CUPL, Chang Ping from May 28th to June 7th, 2018.
Combining theory with practice, the courses not only included interpretation of constitution and laws of the U.S., but also involved the teaching of lawyers’ practice in the business field. The courses mainly covered three parts following. First, explained the important concepts of the constitution and law of the U.S. through the analysis of the specific cases and interpreted the structure of the court, the judicial process and vital institutions and principles of the constitution and law of the United States. Second, invited lawyer Han Lijie, teacher Yang Yusheng and Zhou Dawei to deliver the lessons about the developing history of the construction of the United States and knowledge of M&A and financing. Finally, turn to focus on the important bilingual contract problem in the practice of lawyer, especially explanation of the contract law and contract drafting.
The courses were very popular among teachers and students and attracted many teachers and students who were interested in American law and practice. In addition to the students from the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, there were also undergraduates and doctors from the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School and International Law School. Professor Man’s marvelous lectures provided students with introduction of the American law studies, which was helpful to build the legal thinking and stimulated the students’ interest of the lawyer profession through the rich explanation of practical experience.
Professor Thomas Man is the vice dean and distinguished professor of practice of the International Law School of the Peking University. In 2011, he was listed as "outstanding lawyer" in the field of M&A and financing by the International Financial Law Review. In 2015, he was elected as the director of the international association of evidence science. Professor Thomas Man served in several top international law firms in Chicago, Shanghai and Beijing and were the partner of the Baker & McKenzie, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, Hogan Lovells and Morrison & Foerster Law Firm.
